This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence—economic, political, even spiritual—is felt in every city, every statehouse, every office of the federal government. We recognise the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society. Norman Swallow's The Musicmakers broadcast. Major Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space onboard Vostok 1. The flight consisted of a single orbit around Earth which skimmed the upper atmosphere at ninety nautical miles. The flight took one hundred and eight minutes from launch to landing. FAI rules in 1961 required that a pilot needed to land with the spacecraft for it to be considered a spaceflight. Although some contemporary Soviet media sources stated that Gagarin had parachuted separately to the ground, the Soviet Union insisted that he had landed with the Vostok; the government forced the cosmonaut to lie in press conferences and the FAI subsequently certified the flight. The Soviet Union did not admit until 1971 that Gagarin had ejected and landed separately from the descent module. Glasgow Celtic's Billy McNeill was one of three players besides Quinn making their debut for Scotland (Bobby Shearer for Rangers and Motherwell's Johnny MacLeod were the others). In the week leading up to the match, Greaves was signed by AC Milan, but because of the embargo on foreign players in the Italian League, Milan could only sign him Chelsea as an 'option to buy', of which they paid ten thousand pounds.
